Newborn survives 8 hours in pit latrine

A newborn baby miraculously survived more than eight hours in a pit toilet where she was dumped and left for dead by her mother.

The incident took place during the early hours of Sunday morning at Oshilulu village, near Okahao constituency in the Omusati region.

Confirming the incident, Omusati police Deputy Commissioner Moses Simaho said the 30-year-old mother approached Okahao District Hospital as she was losing a significant amount of blood.  She allegedly told the nurses that she had a miscarriage, while she was visiting the toilet. An investigation led the police and health officials to the pit latrine where the baby was found.

Simaho said the pit latrine was demolished and the baby girl was retrieved. Both the mother and the baby were admitted to the same hospital and their conditions are stable.

This is the fifth baby dumped in a space of two weeks, said the police.

Last Friday, a baby girl, estimated to be a week old, was found dumped in a bush at Onamhinda village near Oshikango. The suspect is unknown, and police investigations are ongoing.

In a separate incident, the body of a baby was found in a skip bin by a passer-by again on Friday at Tulinawa location in Swakopmund.

The police said the body was found wrapped in a plastic bag and was seemingly in a decomposed state with its head mutilated.

Another baby was left on a chair at the casualty department of Oshakati Intermediate Hospital.

“The one-year-old baby was left behind by a mother who did not want to be found as she did not leave any form of identification for herself or the baby. The hospital passport that was on the baby bag had her name and that of the baby removed,” said the police.

A female bartender was also recently arrested at Omuthiya after she was found in a pool of blood, minutes after she had served her customers. The woman allegedly left the customers unattended in the bar and went to the back room where curious customers found her profoundly bleeding. A dead baby was later discovered in the same room.  - vkaapanda@nepc.com.na
