Oshakati Totem Expo returns

OSHAKATI – The spirit of culture, identity and entrepreneurship will once again take centre stage in Oshakati, as the town prepares to host the 14th edition of the Oshakati Totem Expo.

This event continues to celebrate tradition while opening doors for local economic growth.

Scheduled to take place from 29 May to 6 June 2026 at the Oshakati Stadium, the expo will bring together cultural groups, businesses, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), artists and community members under one vibrant platform.

According to Oshakati Town Council spokesperson Martin Kapuka, the expo has grown into one of the town’s most important cultural and economic events.

“The Oshakati Totem Expo is more than just a cultural gathering. It is a platform where our traditions meet opportunity. It allows communities to celebrate their identity while creating space for entrepreneurs, artists and businesses to showcase their talents and products,” Kapuka said.

The event highlights the rich diversity of totems and clan traditions, giving visitors the chance to learn about cultural heritage through performances, storytelling, crafts and exhibitions.

Kapuka noted that the expo also plays a key role in supporting the local economy.

“Events like this stimulate the local economy by creating business opportunities for SMEs, food vendors, artisans and corporate exhibitors. It attracts visitors to Oshakati, which benefits local accommodation facilities, transport operators and informal traders,” he added.

A wide range of exhibitors are expected this year, including traders selling traditional crafts, fashion, local cuisine and the ever-popular kapana, while artists and cultural dance groups will bring the stage to life with performances that reflect Namibia’s rich cultural heritage.

For many vendors, the expo is not just about celebration but also about livelihoods. Small businesses often use the platform to introduce their products to new customers, grow their networks and increase their income.

Beyond the business side, the expo carries a strong human-interest element. Families, elders and young people gather to reconnect with their roots, share stories of their clans and celebrate the traditions passed down through generations.

The atmosphere is typically filled with music, laughter, the aroma of sizzling kapana and colourful displays of traditional attire.

Businesses and traders interested in participating can apply for stands, with different categories available for corporates, SMEs, kapana vendors, traditional exhibitors and outdoor traders.

Artists and cultural dance groups are also encouraged to take part.

Forms are available at the Oshakati Town Council Head Office, where interested participants can secure their place in what promises to be another vibrant celebration of culture, identity and enterprise. -taimihaihambo2000@gmail.com
