Homeowners at Osona Village just outside Okahandja have been up in arms over what they call regular power outages for almost four days. Some residents claimed their electric appliances have been damaged and perishable food spoiled during the persistent interruptions.

In a statement issued last week by the Namibia Power Corporation (NamPower), Osona Village has been experiencing intermittent power supply interruptions since 16h00 on Tuesday, 14 June 2022.

“A power outage was initially experienced on Tuesday, which was restored at 22h28 the same day. However, another power outage was again experienced on 15 June 2022 at 9h24. As of 17h12 the same day, power was returned to the village completely,” reads the statement.

Residents have complained about the long power interruptions, saying their home lives have been made unbearable at times as they were forced to find means of living without electricity.

In various social media clips seen by New Era, many residents claimed Osona Village was struggling with increased capacity, especially with winter loads.

“We must just boycott the construction of these houses until they rectify this issue. They can’t continue to add pressure on that substation by adding more houses to it. If we don’t act, this is what we will face every year,” read a message from one of the residents.

Another resident added: “I think we all now know that Osona power supply is unable to handle the
number of people living here. As soon as we come from work, the power supply is cut. No notification or anything. They must really up their game.”

At the time of going to press, Osona Property Management Company (OPMC) CEO Alex Goethe did not provide comment on the matter, saying he will communicate in due course.
