Over 900 000 youths register to vote

Over 900 000 youths register to vote

Of the 1.4 million registered voters, 901 316 were born after 1982, meaning they are younger than 42 and considered youth.

The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) revealed this at a press conference yesterday, while simultaneously handing over voters’ registers to all registered political parties.

Furthermore, official statistics indicate that 1 051 registered voters were born before 1925, 27 978 between 1925 and 1944, and 521 099 were born between 1945 and 1981.

The figures were revealed by ECN chairperson Elsie Nghikembua when she released the Provisional Voters’ Register and General Voters’ Registration (GVR) statistics in the capital.

“Following the successful conclusion of the GVR, a total number of 1 465 129 records were uploaded to the central server.

With this verification exercise, the system detected 13 685 multiple entries of the provisional statistics recorded and reported daily during the GVR. This resulted in a decrease of 0.93%, rounded off to 1%, bringing the final provisional statistics to 1 451 444, or 90% [of] registered voters. While this shows a decrease of 1% in the total preliminary statistics, it also demonstrates the effectiveness and capability of the biometric voter registration system to ensure that every registered voter appears only once in the voters’ register,” Nghikembua said.

Releasing the voters’ register, she said this will be displayed for objections between 29 August and 4 September 2024 countrywide in all 121 constituencies, in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Act.

“As we commence the election phase, I urge you all to collectively employ effective voter education efforts to ensure that all registered voters turn up to vote on 27 November 2024. Let us remember that the right to vote is a fundamental right that must be upheld and protected by all,” she appealed.
