WINDHOEK – There has been a tremendous outpouring of grief across the country following the shock demise on Monday of Ovaherero Paramount Chief, Kuaima Riruako.

Chief Riruako who was held in high esteem by many passed away aged 79 in the Roman Catholic hospital where he was admitted for high blood pressure. Senior traditional and other leaders spoke about his dedication and many Namibians specifically Ovaherero people said they were deeply touched and shocked by the death of Chief Riruako. Senior Traditional Councillor in the Ovaherero Traditional Authority at Aminuis Bethold Tjiundje said the  entire Aminuis community was shocked to learn about Chief Riruako’s death. “Is like many of us never thought that the chief would one day pass on and this has left many of us with more questions than answers,” he said. “A tree can’t grow without roots and he was the tree that provided the shade,” he added.

Chief David Fredericks of Bethanie gave a very personal tribute to a man whom he described as a smart and realistic person who ‘knew no fear’ and was the architect of the repatriation of the remains of the victims of the genocide from Germany.

“He was an outstanding man and an exceptional commander, who moved his people and loved them and the people loved him,” he said. Fredericks said his memory will forever be in the hearts of the Nama people.

Katutura constituency councillor Abrosius Kandji said he will always be remembered as more than a politician, but a moral leader. “I urge Katutura residents specifically shebeen owners to behave as a sign of respect to the old man,” he said. “Keep the volume of noise at shebeens as low as possible,” he appealed.
