Motorists decry overgrown grass near highways

OMUTHIYA – A number of motorists have taken issue with overgrown grass near busy national roads, which they say is causing problems and danger to drivers.

The motorists have called on the Roads Authority to address the issue.
Last week, a 26-ton mixed load truck swerved off the road between Tsumeb and Oshivelo, as the driver attempted to reverse on the shoulder – and in the process drove over a bridge covered in grass, leading the truck to lean on the side.
“Government should act fast because accidents will be too much; it is difficult to spot wild animals, livestock and human along the roads. It is also difficult for one to pull off,” said road user Fernando Foseka.

RA spokesperson Hileni Fillemon said contractors have started clearing the road reserves whenever the weather permits, adding the equipment is susceptible to wet conditions. “We currently have contractors awarded with three years contracts. They are instructed to execute the work as per the contractual agreement. In fact, the current contracts end in September this year, and we are now in the process of preparing new bids,” added Fillemon.

Furthermore, Fillemon said RA will not be held accountable for road accidents as a result of reduced visibility as opposed to the demands echoed by motorists, who argued the institution should be blamed for failing to resolve the issue timely.

“Rather, motorists should be vigilant as well as adjust their speed based on the conditions of the roads, especially at night and during the rainy season. RA strives to make sure the road is safe at all times; hence, we also urge motorists to adhere to the traffic signs at all times,” she added.
