KATIMA MULILO – For many learners, the first day of high school can be daunting.

It involves meeting new teachers, adjusting to the environment, and making new friends.

However, for three San-speaking learners from Masambo Primary School in Bwabwata National Park, the experience has been nothing short of exciting.

The journey from Masambo Primary School, located 140 kilometres from Katima Mulilo, marks a significant moment in their academic journeys.

It not only symbolises their commitment to education, but also represents a source of pride for their community, where opportunities for higher education have been limited.

Their primary school Life Skills teacher, Saviour Mudala, who escorted them on their first day at high school on Monday, remains optimistic about the learners’ futures, emphasising the importance of creating opportunities for marginalised communities like the San.

The learners’ transition to high school serves as an inspiration for others in their community, proving that with determination and support, they too can pursue their dreams.

These hard-working learners, who excelled in their Grade 7 examinations last year, were among the fortunate ones to secure placements at Caprivi Senior Secondary School in Katima Mulilo, one of Zambezi’s top-performing schools.

Mudala said the learners have been admitted into the science stream, and are residing in the school’s hostel.

The teacher, proud of their achievement, expressed confidence in their ability to succeed. “I know this is one of the best schools in the region. I am hopeful that our learners will excel in their academic work and make us proud,” he said.

Among the learners is 13-year-old Lisa Ben, who shared her excitement about starting high school.

“I feel good to be in high school at Caprivi Senior Secondary. I passed my Grade 7 very well. I promise to study very hard, and make my parents and community proud,” Ben said.

She dreams of becoming a nurse after graduating from university, a goal she believes is within reach through hard work and dedication.

Another learner, Mukano Boysen, also 13, echoed the excitement, expressing her ambition to succeed.

“I will study hard to pass grade 8. I want to be a pilot when I grow up. Caprivi Senior Secondary School was our first choice, and we are happy to be admitted to one of the best schools in the region,” she said with determination.
