A new seed ready to blossom

Home Columns A new seed ready to blossom

Wow I can’t believe I will be seeing your name in the newspaper, that is what a friend of mine said when I told her I will be writing for New Era. I don’t blame her at all because it is not every day you get to write for a distinguished newspaper like New Era.

Who said dreams only come true in fairytales, here I am doing what I wanted to do all my life, writing and not just writing but particularly for New Era.

It will take a bit of time to get used to the fact that I’m at New Era now, but I’m here and work has already started as you should have seen the news articles with my byline and that’s just the beginning.

So who am I you all are probably wondering, I’m Hamutenya Matheus a humble and happy guy that recently joined New Era. I’m originally from Bunya a beautiful village in the Kavango West region. It’s just 40 km west of Rundu so you should all make an effort to pass by, enjoy nature and the beautiful scenery surrounding Bunya.

How did I get to New Era? To be honest it wasn’t easy, everyone’s dream is to finish school, go to varsity, get a degree and with that get a job they always wanted. But with the current unemployment rate in Namibia, the road to a job is not easy much less when you want your dream job.

After tertiary I didn’t sit at home with my degree, which is very common nowadays but I got a job thanks to the lack of teachers in the education ministry. Teaching was very nice, I miss my children of 9 A at Bunya Secondary School.

Almost two years of teaching, I got an interview with New Era and the rest as they say is history, my stay as a teacher came to an end and I was on my way to Keetmanshoop.

I’m currently in Windhoek – how do I like it here? Well so far so good, I must say the newsroom is always a bit intimidating at first. So many things went through my mind before I got here, how would my new colleagues be? Will my editor be like the one in the Spiderman movies? What will I write on?

A couple of days into my work and it’s going better than I thought, the people are very friendly here, it feels great to be part of this great family.
They say a seed will blossom in the right conditions.

I believe and trust I’m at the right place and part of the right team where I can learn, grow and blossom.

I almost forget, where I come from it’s rude not to say thanks, so thank you to the entire New Era team for welcoming me. It’s been a good few days and I can’t wait to get to the //Karas region where I am entrusted to bring the esteemed readers of this paper the happenings in that region.

I’m a village guy and I will miss village life a lot.
