Namibian powerlifter Phillipus Shangadi is set to fly the national flag high at the World Powerlifting Championship in Brazil from 22 to 26 October.
The competition will bring together elite lifters from across the globe.
Shangadi’s participation marks a major milestone for Namibia’s growing strength sport scene.
For the past few months, the national powerlifting champion has been working tirelessly to secure funding to make the trip possible.
His determination and persistence paid off last Friday when JSB Sports Betting stepped in with crucial sponsorship, covering his return flight tickets and competition attire.
Jevon Wilson, manager of JSB Sports Betting, said the company is proud to support Shangadi in his journey to represent Namibia on the world stage.
“Shangadi has a chance to make history by achieving a top three finish in Brazil, which would be a first for Namibia on the global sporting stage. We want to make sure he gets the opportunity to compete and inspire the next generation of powerlifters,” he said.
The sponsorship has given Shangadi renewed motivation and confidence ahead of the world championship.
He expressed heartfelt appreciation to JSB Sports Betting for stepping in at a critical time.
“They came through for me at a crucial time even though it was short notice. I’m truly grateful for their help,” Shangadi said.
He extended his gratitude to Dino Ballotti for facilitating the sponsorship and to Access Electronic for their continued support throughout his athletic journey.
Despite the breakthrough, the powerlifter still faces financial challenges, as he needs additional funds to cover accommodation, meals and logistics in Brazil.
He remains hopeful that more sponsors and well-wishers will come forward to help him fulfil his dream of representing Namibia and potentially securing the country’s first-ever top three global finish in powerlifting.
