Shimooshili congratulates Motsepe on re-election … CAF president trusted to lead region

Namibia Football Association (NFA) president Robert Shimooshili has congratulated Patrice Motsepe following his re-election as president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Motsepe was re-elected unopposed for another four-year term at the CAF 14th Extra-Ordinary General Congress held in Cairo, Egypt yesterday.

“The Namibia Football Association proudly congratulates Patrice Motsepe on his unopposed election as CAF president. His dedication and passion for the beautiful game are truly inspiring. We look forward to working closely with him and CAF to develop and elevate football across our continent,” Shimooshili said.

Alongside celebrating Motsepe’s re-election, he also expressed gratitude for the moment of silence observed in honour of Namibia’s late Founding President Sam Nujoma, and NFA general secretary Charles Siyauya, who was laid to rest in Bukalo in Zambezi region on Tuesday.

“I extend my deepest gratitude to the CAF Congress delegates for their collective gesture of solidarity and respect. The moment of silence in honour of our Founding President and general secretary was a profoundly moving tribute. This act of remembrance will forever be cherished, and serve as an inspiration to us all as we continue to build upon their enduring legacy,” he said.

Motsepe (63), whose family trust owns one of Africa’s most prominent clubs, Mamelodi Sundowns, will serve a second four-year term after his first that started in 2021. His candidacy, like this year’s, was unopposed ,and received strong backing from FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

In other CAF election news, four-time African Footballer of the Year Samuel Eto’o secured a place on the executive committee. Eto’o, the president of the Cameroon Football Federation, was elected unopposed as the representative for the central African region on the executive committee.

This came less than a week after he successfully appealed to stand for the post. Eto’o had previously been excluded by CAF’s governance committee in January, but won his case with the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
