The town of Karibib came alive on Saturday as the 11th edition of the prestigious Navachab Half Marathon drew a record-breaking 1 300 participants, cementing its status as one of Namibia’s premier road running events.

In the men’s 21.1-kilometre race, Matias Simon delivered a sterling performance, crossing the finish line first in a time of 1:04:22.

Hot on his heels was Simon Paulus, who finished just two seconds behind in 1:04:24, while Ndahangwanasho Kornelius rounded off the podium with a commendable 1:05:16.

On the women’s side, Lavinia Haitope proved her class once again, claiming the title in 1:17:35.

Seasoned runner Alina Armas, fresh from representing Namibia at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, clocked 1:18:20 to take second place, while Salmi Mpingana settled for third in 1:19:00.

Speaking after his victory, Simon expressed joy and pride at his achievement.

“The race was good. I prepared well and made sure to stay in the top three. I started my preparations three months ago, focusing on fitness. I am proud and happy with my performance,” he said.

The marathon was not only a sporting spectacle but also a community celebration, with thousands of supporters lining the streets. Jo-ann Manuel, director of sport, hailed the massive turnout, which she said reflects both the popularity of the event and the dedication of its sponsors.

“We remain indebted and have nothing but praise to Navachab. For the last years, Navachab has stood by us. To Navachab Mine and all other sponsors, thank you for believing in our dream. Your capital injection has provided the nation and local community with opportunities to excel in sport, trade and entertainment, while also creating a platform for unity and celebration,” he said.
