Stars maintain lead at the top …as Ongos climb up

Log leaders African Stars maintained their position at the top of the Premier League on Saturday, while Young African remained unbeaten after registering a win.

Stars edged hosts Okahandja United 1-0, extending their stay at the top. The defending champions now have 26 points from 13 matches played as of Saturday. Khomas Nampol climbed to second position after defeating northern-based KK Palace 2-0.

The win saw the police team amass 25 points, closing the gap to one point behind log leaders Stars. Ongos, meanwhile, moved to third position after beating Unam FC 1-0 and they now have 23 points, tied with Young African, who are yet to lose a match this season.

This has left the title race open, as the top teams are level or separated by just one or two points. It’s shaping up to be one of the toughest and most unpredictable races yet, with no clear favourite emerging for this season’s honours.

Speaking after the match on Saturday, Agnus Chabala Elemu, Ongos head coach, said the league is intensifying, and it’s becoming hard to predict the favourites, but he is aware that his team has the same goal on its sights.

“It’s a tough season. Every team is equally strong, and it’s hard to pick the favourites. We had a good run last year, but this season is the one we’re really focused on. If we keep our eyes on the prize, we believe we’ll get what we’re working for,” he said.

Unam coach Robert Nauseb said the match result was not a true reflection of their form, but they will go back to the drawing board to address their shortcomings.

“Not the result we had hoped for today. We had a string of chances in both halves but lacked the finishing touch up front. It just wasn’t our day, but I believe it’s something we can work on and hopefully bounce back tomorrow (Sunday),” he said.

In other results on Saturday, Rundu-based Cuca Tops were held to a 1-1 draw by Blue Boys, while Chula Chula stunned Young Brazilians with a 3-0 away victory.

Young African continued their good run, beating Gunners 1-0 at home to remain unbeaten in the league. On Friday, Bucks Buccaneers suffered a 2-3 defeat at the hands of Tigers, resulting in head coach Woody Jacobs being fired.
