Super League action continues this weekend

Rounds four and five of the FNB Women’s Super League continue this weekend in Windhoek and Oshakati, as teams continue their efforts for league honours.

Defending champions Mighty Gunners Ladies FC currently sit top of the log, followed by FC Ongos Ladies in second place and Windhoek City Sporting Club in third. The 12-team league sees NUST Babes FC and Desert Foxes FC at the bottom in 11th and 12th positions.

One of the standout fixtures of the weekend will see the league’s top two teams, Mighty Gunners Ladies FC and FC Ongos Ladies, clash on Saturday at the Julinho Athletic Stadium in Windhoek.

Mighty Gunners head coach Salome Iyambo said reaching the top required discipline, belief and consistency.

“The players trusted the process, trained hard, stayed united and executed the game plan with confidence,” Iyambo said.

She added that maintaining top spot would demand even more effort.

“To stay there, we must remain focused and hungry. We will keep improving, manage recovery well and approach every match with humility and determination, because staying on top takes more effort than getting there,” she said.

Iyambo expects a high-intensity contest against a strong FC Ongos side but believes her team is well prepared.

FC Ongos Ladies head coach Shama Gure said his side’s second-place standing reflects the progress they are making.

“Being second on the log shows that we are doing a lot right and that we are on the right track,” Gure said.

He explained that the team has prioritised consistency, mentality, defensive organisation, transition play, and greater clinicality in front of goal.

“Beyond tactics, the biggest emphasis is mindset. Championships are won through focus, hunger and unity. We are not chasing the number one spot emotionally; we are building toward it professionally, one performance at a time,” he said.

Gure acknowledged Mighty Gunners as a competitive side and said his team will approach the match with confidence and clarity.

“It will be a tough encounter, but I believe in my players. If we stay composed and play with intensity, I’m confident we can get a positive result,” he said.

Fighting to stay afloat

New Era Sport spoke to bottom-placed Desert Foxes FC to assess their readiness for the weekend’s fixtures. Head coach Barron Brown said the team remains positive despite their difficult start to the season.

“We are new and still learning how the Super League operates, but we improve with every game we play and we are ready for our next encounter,” Brown said.

He added that their current position is not where they want to be, but expressed confidence that results will improve.

“We know it’s tough, but we are going to make it and stay in the league. That, I am positive about,” he said.

Brown noted that the team has spent the week working on formations and tactics, identifying its style of play and addressing vulnerabilities.

Desert Foxes will face African Stars Queens on Saturday before taking on Mighty Angels FC on Sunday at the Uukwagula Stadium in Oshakati.
