Home Crime and Courts Suspect killer of girlfriend released on bail

Windhoek

A man was granted bail in the Katutura Magistrate’s Court this week after allegedly slitting his girlfriend’s throat with a knife. Edmond Elvis Nanub, 33, a resident of Havana informal settlement faces a charge of murder, read with the Combatting of Domestic Violence Act of 2003.

He was arrested three years ago and has been in custody ever since. Court documents indicate that on September 11 2013, the accused unlawfully and intentionally killed 26-year-old Getrud Noarises by slitting her throat with a knife.

He was granted bail of N$4 000 by Magistrate Hambeleleni Heita. Idda Itembu represented the State. Mbanga Siyomundji of Siyomundji Law Chambers eventually managed to get the accused released on bail after he spent three years in the holding cells awaiting trial.

As part of his bail conditions, Nanub should not leave the district of Windhoek without informing the investigating officer. He should report on Mondays and Fridays at Wanaheda police station and should not interfere with ongoing investigations.

Last year Willem Visser, who represented Nanub at the time, asked the then prosecutor in the matter, Hans Thourob, whether he was “aware that the accused has been in custody for two years awaiting final investigations. What do you think about releasing the accused on bail?”

“I’m aware the accused is in custody for two years now and I think he should not be released, because this is a serious matter and he is a flight risk,” Thourob replied.

Nanub will return to court on April 19.
