Windhoek

Local tennis players knuckled down to some serious business grilling each other in last weekend’s division two league as the NTA tennis league reached its climax at both the Central Tennis Club and at SKW tennis
courts in Windhoek. CTC A and the Polytechnic tennis teams both consolidated their position at the summit by
clear 17-3 wins each over their opponents CTC OTB and CTC C.

Elsewhere, at the SKW courts, hosts SKW recorded an 18-3 points win over CTC B. CTC A’s Elias Shikongo
defeated Dirk Stein of CTC OTB in straight sets 6-1; 6-1. A much harder fight could be watched when CTC A’s second single player Eno Akpabio struggled to defeat Werner Schuckmann of OTB 6-3 7-6. CTC A’s strong double team of Kuda Chani and Wellington Sibanda prevailed 6-2 6-4 over OTB’s Peter Brinkmann and Greg Chase.

The OTB combination however managed to win the only points for OTB when they beat Elias Shikongo
and Eno Akpabio 6-1 6-1 in the second doubles. In the final doubles Chani/Sibanda of CTC A beat a
tired Stein/Schuckmann combination of OTB 6-2 7-5. In the second encounter at the Central courts, CTC confronted
Poly tennis team and took an early lead over rival CTC when Poly’s strong single players defeated their
opponents in straight sets. Socrates Muyambo beat Risto Shikongo 7-6 6-1 and Colin Nyandoro outsmarted
CTC C’s Ndumiso Moyo 6-2 6-2.

The first doubles however lasted much longer. At the end Prince Loemba and Robert Riethmueller of Poly won in hard fought sets 7-5 6-4 over CTC’s veteran tandem of Bob Mould and Augusto Couselich.

The exhausted Poly doubles team Loemba/Riethmueller then lost 0-6 4-6 to OTB’s Shikongo/Moyo. The
last doubles between Muyambo/ Nyandoro of Poly and Mould/ Couslich of CTC C was a straight and short affair of 6-0 6-2 for the much younger Poly players against the exhausted CTC veterans.

In the third match encounter between SKW and CTC B the SKW youngsters Oliver Diggle beat Jurgens Twyman 6-3 6-4 and Tevin Tait won his singles against John Valentin 7-5 6-4. Clifford Nginovandu and Stefan Meyer won their doubles against Lawrence Kahindi and Tafadzwa Chakare 6-2 6-2.

Diggle and Tait beat Kahindi/ Chakare in the second doubles 6-2 6-2 as well. The only consolation points for guest CTC B against a strong SKW team were won in the last doubles when Nginovandu/ Meyer lost to Twymann/Valentin
6-4 1-6 1-6.

No matches were played in the men’s first league and in the women’s league. The league continues on Saturday, September 12.
