The Collective launches to transform Nam athletics

A new chapter in Namibian athletics is unfolding with the launch of The Collective.

The platform designed to unify talent development and strengthen the country’s sporting ecosystem.

Founded by Hanjo de Klerk, The Collective seeks to identify, nurture and promote young athletes through a structured system that connects coaches, athletes and stakeholders.

Officially launched in Windhoek, the initiative responds to longstanding challenges, such as fragmented structures, limited access to coaching and a lack of clear development pathways.

De Klerk, who began his involvement in athletics at the school level in 2024, said the idea emerged from a need to improve how the sport is managed and developed.

“Last year, after I sat down and asked myself how we can improve the system, how we can create a platform where we develop our next generation athletes, but also the coaches, the idea came across The Collective,” he said.

The platform operates through a multi-tier system that caters to elite athletes, developing competitors and the broader athletics calendar. It provides structured coaching programmes, access to performance tracking, nutritional support and competitive exposure, while also focusing on coach development and rural outreach to ensure inclusivity.

Beyond athlete development, The Collective aims to align Namibia’s athletics calendar into a coordinated national structure, creating a clearer pathway from grassroots to international competition.

The talent search spans all regions, with initial focus areas including Khomas, Erongo, Hardap and Otjozondjupa, targeting athletes in the U/15, U/17 and U/19 categories.

The initiative is also building partnerships with key stakeholders, such as schools, sports institutions and government bodies, including the Namibia Sport Commission, to create a sustainable and collaborative ecosystem.

The Collective is currently partnered with Ogilvy and Windhoek Afrikaanse Privaatskool and is looking to partner with more stakeholders.

Looking ahead, The Collective has outlined an ambitious Vision 2030, which includes increasing the number of Namibian athletes competing internationally and positioning the country as a regional athletics hub through improved infrastructure and systems.

“This won’t happen overnight, but through relentless consistency and collective action, we are laying the foundation today. We know the road to greatness is a marathon, not a sprint, but by standing together, we will ensure that the future of Namibian athletics doesn’t just stay a dream but becomes a reality,” added de Klerk.

The rollout begins with athlete identification and coaching clinics between May and June 2026, followed by regional development programmes, with a fully operational system expected ahead of the 2027 season.
