Top 8 semi-finals set for Saturday in Outjo

Top 8 semi-finals set for Saturday in Outjo

Excitement is building ahead of this weekend’s Standard Bank Top 8 semi-finals in Outjo, where four teams will battle for a place in the final of one of Namibia’s most prestigious knockout football competitions.

The first semi-final will see Unam FC take on FC Ongos at 14h00, while Eleven Arrows and Mighty Gunners will square off in the second clash scheduled for 17h00.

With anticipation mounting, supporters from across the country are already backing their respective teams to go all the way.

Unam supporter Renatus Matheus believes the university side has what it takes to edge past FC Ongos in what he expects to be a tightly contested encounter.

“I believe Unam FC will win this semi-final because these two teams play very similar football,” he said.

“Over the past seasons, matches between Unam and Ongos have usually been very close, with narrow scorelines or draws. There is never a huge difference between the sides.”

Matheus added that neither team has previous experience of playing in a Standard Bank Top 8 final, making the contest even more unpredictable.

“Experience will not decide this match. It will come down to key moments and individual performances,” he explained.

He highlighted goalkeeper Owen as one of UNAM’s most important players heading into the encounter.

“With Owen in goal, we have a goalkeeper who can win games for us in crucial moments. Last season he made many important saves,” he said.

Matheus also praised the team’s attacking wingbacks, saying players such as Paulus, Gideon and Ronaldo could create problems for Ongos from the flanks.

“Our captain Paulus Amutenya can also control the tempo in midfield and help dictate the game. The players are hungry because this is a chance to make history for the club,” he said.

Meanwhile, FC Ongos supporter Riaan Kandanga says his team is ready for the occasion and believes the club has built strong momentum in the competition.

Ongos booked their semi-final place after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over King Kauluma Palace, with Simon Elago scoring the decisive goal.

Kandanga described Ongos as a club driven by ambition and belief.

“This is more than just a football club. Ongos is building something special in Namibian football,” he said.

“Yes, there were league matches where things did not go our way, but football is about how you respond. Ongos responded strongly in the Top 8,” said Kandanga.

He called on supporters from across the country to rally behind the team in Outjo.

“To the supporters in Outjo and surrounding towns, this is your moment. Fill the stadium and support the team,” he urged.

Kandanga also praised head coach Ronny Kanalelo and goalkeeper Jonas Matheus, who has enjoyed an impressive season between the posts.

“Matheus has been outstanding this season, while the technical team has built a squad that believes in itself,” he said.

The semi-finals are expected to attract a large crowd, with football fans eager to witness which teams will advance to the final and continue their pursuit of Top 8 glory.

Mighty Gunners top supporter Petrus Tycoon Nuwuseb says the club remains confident ahead of their clash against Eleven Arrows, adding that cup competitions have always brought out the best in the team.

He acknowledged that Eleven Arrows will provide a tough challenge after both league encounters between the sides ended in draws, but believes Gunners are ready to go one step further and finally lift the trophy.

Nuwuseb highlighted key players such as goal-scorer Mashiku, defender Given Mutuezu, captain Olzen Ameb, Deon Gariseb and Sixa Nambandi as crucial figures in the team’s quest for victory.

Eleven Arrows fan Cuttylove Benson said she is confident that the team will go through to the final.

“I trust in the players and the decisions made by the management and technical team,” said Benson.
