WINDHOEK- Swapo’s candidate for the Windhoek West by-election, Georg Trepper, says there is need to formulate a land system that will make land acquisition for first time buyers easier and affordable.

Namibians have in recent years lamented the cost of land in urban areas and accused the city authorities of running land issues on a capitalist basis.

Many Namibians have even given up on owning their own home one day, with housing prices skyrocketing uncontrollably. Most people living in the city have resorted to renting apartments.

During a press conference held yesterday aimed to update the public regarding the progress being made on preparations for the by-election which is slated for November 14, Trepper pledged to work hand in hand with the city authorities to devise ways to ease land acquisition if voted into power.

“If elected I will work closely with the City of Windhoek because there is a need for a system to make it easier for first time buyers to acquire land,” said Trepper while flanked by Windhoek Mayor Agnes Kafula and Swapo Secretary General Nangolo Mbumba.

Trepper is optimistic that he will emerge victorious and succeed the late Shikwetepo Haindongo who died in August after a short illness.
Trepper also vowed to hold wide consultations with the public for suggestions and feedback.

“People must know that I am not in isolation, I am here under the Swapo Party and therefore I will have to carry out activities as guided by the party,” he said.

According to Mbumba, Trepper has been in the Swapo ranks since the pre-independence era and has held several positions such as regional treasurer for the Khomas Region (1989), information and mobilisation officer for Klein Windhoek (1990), branch coordinator for Augustino Neto Branch (1991) and a full-time Swapo coordinator for the Windhoek West District.

Mbumba said Trepper has an open door policy and knows the needs of those residing in the Windhoek West Constituency.
