The second edition of the Tsjaka exhibition show concluded on Friday in the Omaheke region.
It was organised by the Tsjaka Temothuo Farmers Association (TTFA). One of the event’s organisers, Zedekia Borry Katjiuanjo, told New Era that the purpose of the show is to revive farming in the Tsjaka community to produce best-quality breeds.
The TTFA had set an amount of N$ 80 000 for hosting the event, which was distributed to the winning exhibitors in various categories.
“Farming is one of the economic backbones of the country, and farmers need to be motivated and encouraged to improve their productivity,” he said.
Katjiuanjo added that young people in the area need to be supported and encouraged to take both livestock and crop farming seriously.
By doing so, more employment opportunities will be created.
“This exhibition event also created opportunities for young entrepreneurs and small businesses such as kapana vendors in the region to market their products,” he stated.
Furthermore, the organiser noted that some of the proceeds generated from the event will be used to buy computers and laptops for the farmers association’s offices.
This equipment will be vital for the smooth operations of the office.
“We will help our farmers with online applications with regards to animal and ear tag registrations,” he said.
The system will thus reduce unnecessary travelling and save costs to farmers.
“Of course, we want our office to have free Wi-Fi access for our farmers so that they can get information on farming online to improve their knowledge,” Katjiuanjo continued.
Apart from the competition for small stock, there was a traditional food competition on different Tswana cuisines.
This was aimed at promoting traditional food, and letting young people stick to local components of their culture.
The event was supported by the Omaheke Regional Council and other agricultural stakeholders.
