Turning childhood imagination into fashion reality

Turning childhood imagination into fashion reality

Ondangwa – Thoivo Akuunda is a fashion designer and creative entrepreneur whose journey into fashion began at a tender age, driven by a deep love for creativity and self-expression.

Based in Ondangwa, Akuunda is the founder of TPJ_Creations, a brand built on celebrating individuality, confidence and timeless style while responding to the evolving needs of modern fashion.

His passion for fashion design started as early as Grade 7, when he was about 12 years old at Ambili CS during art lessons.

“It was there that I began cutting dress designs out of paper, placing them on fabrics and stitching them together using a needle and thread,” Akuunda said.  Even before fully understanding fashion as an industry, he was already fascinated by fabrics, colours, and the way clothing could transform a person’s confidence.

“I admired how my teachers dressed, and at home I used to advise my mother and my siblings on how to combine colours and choose outfits,” he recalled.

Akuunda draws inspiration from culture, everyday life and the way fashion reflects identity. For him, clothing is a form of communication that expresses confidence and personality. This belief is captured in his brand motto, ‘Helping you, own your look,’ which reflects his desire to create designs that connect with people on a personal level.

Like many creatives, Akuunda has faced challenges along the way. The fashion industry is highly competitive, and staying relevant while adapting to changing trends and customer expectations requires constant effort. As a multi-talented individual, a fashion designer, MC, debate coach and trainer, job hunting teacher and chef, balancing time while maintaining quality and creativity across all his pursuits has been a major challenge.

Access to affordable yet high-quality fabrics also remains an ongoing concern.

Despite these challenges, his successes continue to motivate him.

“One of my greatest achievements is seeing my work appreciated by clients and audiences who believe in my designs,” he said.  Knowing that his creations make people feel confident and expressive is something he considers a true measure of success. Building a brand that reflects his vision and values, and seeing his designs move from ideas to finished pieces that people proudly wear, has been deeply fulfilling. Having his work featured on Pinterest has also been an overwhelming and encouraging milestone. TPJ Creations targets individuals who see fashion as empowerment, people who want to feel bold, confident and authentic in what they wear.

Looking ahead, Akuunda envisions building a lasting brand that tells stories through unique designs, influencing how people view fashion not just as clothing, but as art, culture and self-expression.

Akuunda believes passion is a great starting point, but it must be matched with hard work, dedication, sacrifice and perseverance.

He encourages young people not to shy away from any honest work that puts food on the table and to remain resilient in the face of discouragement.

“As a male designer, I have faced negative comments, but instead of being discouraged, I use them as motivation to work harder,” he concluded.
