United, Wanderers derby this weekend

Two of Windhoek’s oldest sports clubs will renew their rivalry this weekend as United Rugby Club and FNB Wanderers Rugby Club face off in their annual derby for the Neels Dodds trophy.

The much-anticipated event will take place at United Sport field in Olympia, Windhoek, bringing together athletes across a variety of disciplines. This year’s derby will feature competition in netball, cricket, lawn bowls, knobbles, padel, women’s rugby and men’s rugby, highlighting the depth and diversity of talent within both clubs.

Proceedings begin with the cricket match today, while the remainder of the fixtures are scheduled for tomorrow from 08h00, promising a full day of action for players and supporters alike.

The occasion is particularly significant for United, who are celebrating an impressive 110 years, adding further meaning to an already historic rivalry.

United’s rugby coach, Shaun White, expressed optimism ahead of the encounter, noting both the excitement within his squad and the importance of favourable weather conditions.

“We have got an exciting bunch of young lads playing, so hopefully it does not rain so we can play somewhere dry and then both teams can bring their best on Saturday,” he said. White also highlighted the smooth integration of younger players into the senior setup, adding that the new additions are adapting well and showing strong commitment to the team’s systems.

Meanwhile, United women’s rugby captain Mbitjita Matuzee shared her anticipation for the clash, describing matches against Wanderers as competitive yet respectful. She noted that while some players are feeling nervous, there is a shared sense of excitement as the team prepares to return to action in one of Windhoek’s most celebrated sporting traditions.
