Volleyball league returns this weekend

Volleyball league returns this weekend

The 2026 MTC Volleyball National League (VNL) will begin this Saturday, with Round One scheduled to start at the C’est Si Bon court in Otjiwarongo.

The league is once again expected to deliver high levels of competition and improved performances from participating teams throughout the regions.

This season will feature new participants in both the men’s and women’s categories, while organisers also anticipate a growing fan base across the country.

The 2026 season will consist of seven rounds hosted in Otjiwarongo, Ondangwa, Katima Mulilo, Rundu, Gobabis, Swakopmund and Windhoek, bringing top-level volleyball action to several regions.

A total of eight teams will compete in each category this year.

However, the competition remains largely dominated by Windhoek-based teams.

One notable development this season is the addition of Gobabis as a host town.  The league will also welcome two more teams from the Kavango East region, while Otjozondjupa and //Kharas have lost their spots in the competition.

Another adjustment to the format will be seen in Katima Mulilo, where additional fixtures have been scheduled.

Matches in that round will now be played on both Saturday and Sunday, compared to the previous two seasons, when games were played only on Saturdays.

Last season’s men’s champions, Namibia Correctional Service, are determined to defend their title.

Team coach Likando Anthony said the squad is fully aware that every team will be eager to dethrone them.

“We are well aware that every team will be chasing to beat us, but the hard work, commitment and discipline that we carry into our training sessions every day keep us focused. Winning is easy, but defending a title is what separates the good from the best. We are ready to defend our title and look forward to winning it for the third consecutive time,” said Anthony.

Namibia Volleyball Federation president Tobias Mwatelulo said the league is still evolving, including for those responsible for organising it.

“Constitutions, rules and regulations are easy to follow, implement and enforce because they are documented, and anything undocumented is subject to personal interpretation,” he said.

Mwatelulo also urged fans, supporters, players and team managers to share their views on areas that may require improvement.

“We want to run the most entertaining and enjoyable competition and offer the best to our fans, supporters and participants. Please share your views to help us give you the best. It will always get bigger and better,” he added.
