Weekend Recap

Weekend Recap

A number of sporting events unfolded across Namibia and beyond the borders this weekend, with Namibian athletes making their mark in diverse competitions. From triumphant jukskei performances in South Africa to thrilling netball and basketball clashes on home soil, as well as the bittersweet outcomes in cricket and triathlon, here’s a round-up of key highlights.

Namibian jukskei team achieves significant victories

The Namibian senior jukskei teams for the over-50 and over-60 age categories participated in International Test Matches against South Africa in Kroonstad. The men’s teams in both age categories emerged undefeated, winning all their matches against their South African counterparts. Meanwhile, the women’s teams put on a strong performance, clinching victories in two of their test matches.

Namibian triathletes fly country’s flag high

Two bronze medals were clinched by Namibia at the African Triathlon Championship in Nelson Mandela Bay. Maja Brinkmann and Nathan Chase both achieved third place in their respective junior races. In the 37-strong junior men’s field, Matt Reece Izaaks (15th) and James Langford (18th) also competed. South African athletes won both junior categories. Meanwhile, Jerome Rooi became the new PTS2 African champion. Mateus Angula finished third in only his second triathlon ever.

Namibia miss out on World Cup spot

Namibia’s national U/19 men’s cricket team, known as the Walvis Bay Salt Eagles, narrowly missed out on qualifying for the ICC U/19 Men’s Cricket World Cup Africa Qualifier in Nigeria. Competing against five other nations, Namibia fell short after a crucial loss to Tanzania—who went on to win all their matches and secured the sole qualification spot.

Khomas basketball league intensifies

The Khomas Basketball League delivered a thrilling round of fixtures at the Unam Gym Hall, with around 10 games played across three different categories. The standout clash saw Unam Phoenix dominate BAS Falcons in a jaw-dropping 107-35 showdown, earning the title of ‘match of the weekend.’ Titus Mwahafa, a representative of the Namibia Basketball Federation (NBF), expressed his satisfaction with the level of competition, noting the league’s growing intensity and excitement.

Fireworks in the Khomas Netball League

The Khomas Netball League returned this weekend with over 10 games played across all three divisions, bringing vibrant energy to the courts.

League chairman Dimitri Bittler told this publication on Saturday at Wanderers Netball Court that he is happy with the competition level this season, compared to the previous
year.

“This is one of the most exciting seasons we have had. We have more youthful players who are eager to make statements in the league, while top players are doing their best to ensure they lead their respective teams to glory,” he said.
