KEETMANSHOOP – Newly elected //Kharas Regional Council chairperson, Gerrit Witbooi, said development is impossible in an environment divided by personal interest and or political differences.
Witbooi echoed these sentiments during his swearing-in as Keetmanshoop rural constituency councillor and, subsequently, his election as chairperson in the southern town recently.
“In this council, we are diverse but share a common goal, namely to improve //Kharas region’s future, and that is why I call on all stakeholders to be partners in progress,” he pleaded. The politician highlighted that, although the region is blessed with abundant natural resources, it also struggles with unemployment, drought, substance abuse, gender-based violence, urban migration, and ongoing inequalities.
“The duties and responsibilities attached to my portfolio as chairperson are, however, not mine alone; they belong to citizens in the region, reflecting their hopes for elective governance, ethical leadership, and a regional council that will work tirelessly to uplift its community,” Witbooi said.
“As residents, let us walk this journey together and build a region where development is felt in every household, with no one left behind. The trust you, as citizens, place in us must translate into real, visible, measurable, and impactful changes.”
Reflecting on his priorities for his tenure, the councillor outlined improved service delivery, meaning that decentralised government operates efficiently, transparently and consistently for all citizens; promotes regional development by expanding economic opportunities, supporting entrepreneurs and attracting businesses to foster local growth; empowers youth; upholds accountability and good governance; and encourages active community collaboration.
The chairperson said that he and the team are ready to work, listen, and lead //Kharas region to greater heights.
