WSL action continues across the country

Football fans cap expect an exciting action-packed weekend as the topflight women’s league, the FNB Women’s Super League (WSL), takes centre-stage at various venues across the country.

Action kicks off today at the NFA Technical Centre in Katutura, Windhoek at 18h00, with Nust Babes taking on Okahandja FC.

On Saturday, the matches continue, with seventh-placed Julinho Athletic Ladies facing in-form third-placed African Stars Queens at NFA Technical Centre at 09h00.

Coastal outfit Arrows Ladies, who are currently fifth on the log standings, will clash with title contenders and second-placed Beauties at the same venue, in a game expected to kickoff at 11h00.

Nust Babes will return to action at the NFA Technical Centre at 14h00 on Saturday, when they square off against V-Power Angels, who are placed ninth with eight points.

Namib Daughters, who are positioned 11th and are fighting to avoid the dreaded relegation, will take on Okahandja at 13h00 at Mondesa Stadium. Meanwhile, Khomas Nampol, in fourth place, will take on defending champions and league leaders Ongos Ladies FC in a tie expected to start at 16h00, and the day will conclude with a match between Windhoek City and Unam Bokkies at 18h00, all at NFA technical centre.

Beauties’ head coach Salome Iyambo said with few games left before the league concludes, she expects the competition to become tougher. However, she maintained that her team is in good shape, and having a game in hand will be to their advantage.

“With seven games to go, every point counts. Our focus is on maintaining high-performance levels, staying mentally prepared, disciplined  and resilient, and taking each game as it comes. The squad is united, hungry and fully-committed to finishing the season strongly. We know the competition is fierce, but we believe in our strategy, our preparations and most importantly, our players,” she said.

Shama Gure, head coach of Ongos, echoed similar sentiments about his charges, saying they hope to collect points over the weekend, but need to guard against complacency as every team will be out to collect maximum points.

“It’s a difficult stage in the league. Those at the bottom want to collect points, so I think every team is currently a threat. You can’t underestimate any team in the league right now, as anything can happen to anyone,”

“I am confident that we have a great team with great players, and I hope this weekend will turn out as we want it to. We would like to win all our games and extend our run at the top,” he said.

On Sunday, Arrows will take on African Stars Queens at 09h00, while Julinho Athletic Ladies will square off against Beauties at the NFA technical centre at 11h00. Namib Daughters, on the other hand, will take on V-Power at Mondesa Stadium at 10h00. Windhoek City will take on Ongos Ladies at 14h00, while Khomas Nampol will face Unam Bokkies at NFA technical centre at 16h00. – mkambukwe@nepc.com.na
