The topflight women’s football league, FNB Women’s Super League (WSL), will resume this weekend with a number of title-deciding matches lined up for Saturday.
The league was temporarily put on hold following the passing of Founding President Sam Nujoma, last month as a mark of respect.
This weekend’s fixtures will be played across various venues nationwide, with one of the most anticipated clashes being between log leaders Beauties and defending champions Ongos Ladies at the Namibia Football Association (NFA) Technical Centre at 18h00.
Beauties currently sit at the top of the log with 22 points from eight matches, having won seven and drawn one. They remain unbeaten this season, scoring an impressive 33 goals while conceding only once. Meanwhile, Ongos Ladies trail closely behind with 20 points from eight matches, winning six and drawing two.
Speaking on the importance of the match, Shama Gure emphasised its significance in shaping the season. “This match holds great significance for us. It’s an opportunity to measure our progress, reinforce our strategies, and, most importantly, get back into a competitive rhythm after a period of uncertainty. Every game matters, and this one is no different. We approach it with focus and determination,” he said.
Meanwhile, second-placed African Stars Queens will be looking to extend their strong run when they host eighth-placed Windhoek City at Uukwangula Stadium. Stars are level on 22 points with leaders Beauties, while Windhoek City have managed to collect only 10 points from their outings so far.
Unam Bokkies, currently in sixth position with 12 points, will take on 11th-placed Namib Daughters, who are struggling at the bottom with just five points from nine matches.
Rundu-based Julinho Athletic Ladies, who are seventh on the standings with 11 points, will welcome V-Power Angels, who are placed 10th five points. Arrows Ladies, who currently sit in fifth position with 13 points, will take on a struggling Okahandja side, rooted at the bottom of the log with four points from nine matches.
Kennedy Malgas, head coach of Okahandja FC said Saturday’s match will be tough and will be hoping to collect points. “We have not had a good run so far, but with a two-week break, I believe we have gotten enough time to rest and get our act together. All our players are available,” he said.
