In a short interlude with members of the media, President Hifikepunye Pohamba described the flood situation in the Caprivi region as awful.
The President said this following his helicopter tour of the swamped areas in the region. Last week, the President flew over Singalamwe, Choi, Mbalasinte, and Schuckmansburg. He said during his tour of the flooded areas, he saw a number of people migrating from flooded areas to higher ground.
“I can describe the situation as very bad indeed because I saw villages under water and surrounded by water. I also saw people shifting from one village to other villages, which are not engulfed by water,” said the President following his visit.
He said there is a shortage of food and decent accommodation for learners and teachers as well as people who were relocated to camps at Schuckmansburg and that the situation needs urgent attention.
He, however, said though the situation is bad, he is happy that efforts are being made to resolve the problems and that food will be delivered to the affected people.
The President held separate closed-door meetings with all the four traditional leaders of the Mafwe, Masubia, Mayeyi and Mashi tribal authority.
He said he was happy to meet fellow leaders from the region. The President said he had benefited from the meetings where the traditional leaders briefed him about the living conditions of the people.
