Artists have less then a week to submit their artwork for the Bank Windhoek and the National Art Gallery of Namibia’s (NAGN) 30×30 Art Competition with the June 17 deadline fast approaching.
Ndeenda Shivute, curator for the National Art Gallery of Namibia, says the deadline has been extended from May 31 to June 17 June to allow amateur artists and secondary school learners more time to submit their concepts. The competition, which aims to discover new and fresh talents in Namibia, requires artists to translate their creative ideas into any medium on a 30×30 cm stretched canvas or 30×30 cm sketch paper.
“This is the final chance for aspiring artist to prepare and submit their concepts. In the first phase of the competition, artists must complete the entry form and provide a short description of the idea that they intend to develop on the canvas or paper. Artists can also support their ideas with preliminary sketches, collage, photomontage etc., intended materials and/or written text. Entry forms are available at the NAGN offices, Bank Windhoek branches countrywide and can also be downloaded from the Bank Windhoek and NAGN websites,” Ndeenda explains.
The competition consist of two categories, namely a School Category for secondary school learners (Grade 8 to 12 and age 14 to 18 at the time of submission) and an Amateur Category for artists above 18 years who do not have any tertiary arts qualification and have not had a solo exhibition or participated in a curated exhibition. Ndeenda urges teachers in secondary schools across the country to encourage learners who are gifted in visual arts to enter the competition. She adds that this is an opportunity for them to be discovered and have the opportunity to exhibit their artworks at the National Art Gallery of Namibia.
Bronwyn Moody, communication practitioner at Bank Windhoek appeals to artists to follow the theme of the competition, which is “It’s Possible”. “The theme encourages artists to use their imagination and explore different possibilities with their artwork. Your concept should relate to the theme of the competition, or we have no other choice, but to disqualify the application. A maximum of three concepts per artist may be submitted,” she says.
