Local Businessperson, Johan Schoombee, is the overall winner of the 27th edition of the annual Snoek Derby competition held here on May 28.

The competition was held at the Lüderitz Waterfront. Schoombee was the second overall winner at last year’s Snoek Derby. The Snoek Derby is an annual event and has been staged over the last 27 years at the Southern harbour town, usually during the Snoek fish season. A total of 234 participants with valid fishing licences took to the sea as early as 05h00 the Saturday of the competition to try their luck until 13h00, with the one catching the biggest snoek fish, declared the overall winner.

A lots of prizes were at stake ranging from the smallest fish weighing in at 3.30kg, from 21 contestants. Schombee caught the largest snoek fish weighing 5.50kg to claim first prize of N$25 000. Kornelius Mushalukwa finished second overall for a consolation prize of N$15 000, with his catch weighing  5.30kg, while Kondjeni Petrus walked away with the third prize of N$10 000, with his catch weighing 4.59kg.

One of the organisers, Maritza Morgan, said the event was a charity initiative and contributes largely to the less privileged communities in town with all catches donated to various soup kitchens and charitable organisations. She thanked the sponsors who made the event possible as well as the vessels owners.  Air Namibia sponsored the two Air Namibia return tickets to any regional or domestic destination serviced by Air Namibia, valid for six months from the date of prize giving, and the lucky winner was Jacky Victor
