Free Your Mind Stand-up comedy presents the Annual Celebrity Shakedown Arts for Life Awards at the Warehouse Theatre next Thursday.

The award, the eighth  will be honouring  reputable, well established  and hardworking comedians. “Every Free Your Mind show has a specific theme and the November show is always the Life for Arts show where we, as comics, celebrate performing arts with more focus on stand-up comedy because we are not really recognized at other award shows,” says Janice Tobias Free Your Mind! Marketing Coordinator.

He adds that will also be celebrating other deserving artists. “As it is, we are aiming to have this show highly rated in terms of the overall Namibian entertainment calendar. As it stands it is one of our biggest shows on our own calendar,” saysTobias.

Free Your Mind! Marketing Manager, Mzomuhle Sibanda, says this year they are also going to give awards to individuals, companies and organisations that changed or impacted the Namibian social scene, and journalist that supported Free Your Mind this year. Unlike last year, they will have five categories of which the two, “Best Male comic of the Year” won by Courage, and “Best female of the Year” coveted by Sibongile last year, have been combined into one category  ‘Comic of the Year. This year’s nominees are Courage, Iileka, Mark and Sibongile. The second category is “Best Newcomer” and nominees are Lloyd, Jandjie. Winner of this category last year was Kris with a K.

Tobias says the other three categories are mock awards to be given out to individuals, companies and organisations. ‘Gwara of the Year’ will be awarded to a journalist, ‘Chill spot of the Year’ will be awarded to the owner of a place where the youth have flocked the most this year and ‘Tsotsi of the Year’ will be awarded to a business entity that has made money out of struggling people. “The nominees for these categories will be announced at the show. We have a secret panel of judges who will vote for these winners,” says Sibanda. The winners will be awarded with a trophies and cash. The show has been made possible by K22, College of the Arts and Warehouse Theatre.

Fans can vote through the Free Your Mind Facebook page or on twitter using the hashtags, examples (#BNCcomicsname and #COTYcomicsname).
