City Police Traffic Tips: Speed cameras ensure safer roads

Community Policing Officer

Speeding is a prevalent traffic violation that leads to a significant number of accidents, injuries, and fatalities in Windhoek each year. As law enforcement, our primary goal is to ensure public safety and promote responsible driving behavior particularly on City roads.  Statistically, over 1 735 crashes were recorded from January 2023 up to date with about 30-40 speed fines issued per day through the use of speed cameras. On average and depending on the speed driven on a particular road way, a speed fine can range from N$375 to N$4000.

The Windhoek City Police deploys speed cameras on a hit and run basis to monitor and enforce speed limits, with the aim to reduce traffic violations and crashes. Speed cameras are deployed in areas with high accident rates or areas with a history of speeding violations in order to promote compliance with speed limits. These speed cameras serve as a valuable tool to encourage responsible driving and reduce the risks associated with excessive speeding.

Moreover, the use of speed cameras could possibly play a role in the reduction of speeding-related crashes. They act as a deterrent to speeding because drivers are more likely to adhere to enforced speed limits when they know cameras are actively monitoring their behavior. The mere presence of these automated devices acts as a constant reminder for motorists to observe speed limits, reducing the likelihood of speeding and reckless driving behaviors. This, in turn, not only helps reduce the occurrence of accidents but equally the extent of damage to property.

As law enforcement officers, we constantly strive to protect lives and improve overall road safety through law enforcement. Speed cameras, being part of technology through the implementation of a safer City Concept, continue to play a vital role in this endeavour. The presence of speed cameras sends a strong message to communities about the commitment of law enforcement to ensure public safety. It is therefore crucial to recognise the benefits that speed cameras bring in terms of increasing compliance with speed limits, reducing accidents and saving lives.

The Windhoek City Police encourages all road users to always observe the speed limits on the roads they are traveling on and comply with the speed limits thereon. In addition, always make it a point to inquire with our office for outstanding speed fines.
