Conductor Manuel Sasindere led his choir from the Christian Youth Ministry to victory at the Shabbach Clash Choir Competition on Saturday, and earned a cash prize of N$1500 and a
floating trophy.
The competition was aimed at uplifting the spirits of the youth, showcasing three competing choirs, after three others withdrew from the contest.
The inaugural event was hosted at Freedom Square in Windhoek. “I am excited, thrilled and overwhelmed with joy. Winning this competition has made me believe in my choir. During practice, it is often hard to gauge our true potential, but this victory has shown us just how far we have come,” he said.
The choir, which has its roots embedded in the community, was formed around the 1990s. Originally a church group, the choir’s mission was to spread the gospel through music.
“Our choir was established to spread the word of
God ,not just through preaching, but also through the powerful medium of song. We believe that music has the unique ability to heal and uplift people, conveying emotions that words alone cannot do,” he said.
The journey to the competition was not without its challenges. Sasindere and choir members dedicated their time and effort, rehearsing after work and during school hours.
“Preparing for this competition required many sacrifices. We practised long into the night, and while there were times when it was unsafe, faith kept us going,” he said. Each choir brought its unique style and passion to the stage, making for an evening of unforgettable performances and community spirit.
Sasindere said the choir was initially nervous during the competition, as standing before the judges was intimidating.
But he said they drew strength from the preparation, and their belief in the mission.
Despite the pressure, the choir’s performance was outstanding, and their hard work and dedication paid off.
Looking ahead, they envisage a bright future.
“This win has eliminated any doubts we had
about our abilities. It has given us renewed hope, and encouraged us to continue spreading the message
through music. In the coming years, we aim to expand our choir, inviting more youth to join us and share in this enriching experience,” he said.
