The Popular Democratic Movement last week donated caskets to the families of the four minors who died after suffocating in an unused refrigerator in the Cowboy settlement in Katima Mulilo.

The party stated stating that it is their social responsibility to assist their community in times of tragedy.

In a press release, the opposition party expressed deep sadness and profound shock of the tragic deaths of the four young children, Precious Simataa (3), Chombo Matengu (3), Variety Lubilo (6), and Mwaka Muzimisa (4).

“The loss of such young and innocent lives is a devastating blow to the community, and we mourn with you during this incredibly painful time. Our thoughts and prayers are with the grieving families, and we pray that you find comfort and strength during this tragedy,” former PDM lawmaker Geofrey Mwilima said last week.

He further stated, “This tragic incident underscores the urgent need for creating safer environments for our children. PDM urges all town councils and municipalities to prioritise the establishment of recreational parks and safe play areas for children. These spaces provide not only a secure place for children to grow and play but also foster a sense of community and care for our young ones. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that children are protected from harm and have access to safe, nurturing environments.”

Mwilima cautioned all parents, guardians, and communities to be vigilant and take extra care of the safety of their children, especially when it comes to areas of play: “This incident is a stark reminder of how quickly innocent play can turn into a tragedy.”

“We further call on municipalities, regional councils, and local authorities to intensify efforts in the removal of all disused or hazardous items within our communities. Whether it be old vehicles, appliances, or other dangerous objects, these items pose a significant risk, especially to children. PDM believes that a coordinated and proactive approach to public safety can prevent such heart-breaking incidents in the future,” he added.
