OTJOMBINDE – Red Fighters Football Club won the Traugot Kandorozu Primary School tournament held over the weekend at Lister settlement in the Omaheke region.
The competition was staged at the school playground, and attracted five football teams who played in a round-robin basis. The participating teams were Scorpions, Dynamos, Red Fighters, El Clasico and Life Inno City. In the first encounter, Scorpions drew with a goalless scoreline against Red Fighters from Otjorutjandja. This was followed by another competitive clash between Dynamos from Klipbaar against Rietfontein-based Life Inno City, where the game ended in a one-all stalemate.
Otjombinde’s El Clasico faced Scorpions in the third match, which also ended in two goals apiece. Red Fighters produced another stellar performance and stunned Life Inno City with a solitary goal.
The last game produced another stalemate, where Dynamos drew by two goals apiece after
regulation against time.
Red Fighters were then crowned the winners after coming first in the ranking, followed by El Clasico and Scorpions in second and third places, respectively. School sport organiser Chris Tengovandu Karumendu added that netball only attracted two teams in the name of host Traugott and Tallismanus team. Tallismanus defeated the host by nine goals to five scoreline.
“This competition was all about having fun and raising money for the school gate. Our entrance needs to be built properly, and thus we must raise funds to construct it,” he said. The organiser said there were no
major prizes given to the winners, as it was merely meant to raise funds for the school.
“This is the beginning, and we will continue next year by hosting more sporting activities. We are appealing to good Samaritans to come forward and aid our initiative,” he said.
Asked about other needs the school may have, Karumendu said they also want to demarcate the hostel from the school with a fence. “We need assistance in that regard, and the community must help with money for labour as we have already bought the fencing materials. The playground needs fencing, as cattle are passing through,” he said.
Traugott PS is home to 486 pupils, and is situated about 12 kilometres north of Tallismanus in the Omaheke region’s Otjombinde constituency.
