2025 Region 5 Youth Games rescheduled

2025 Region 5 Youth Games rescheduled

The Council of Ministers responsible for sport in the Africa Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 has announced a change of dates for the 2025 youth games.

Initially scheduled to take place from 6 to 15 June, the games will now be from 4 to 13 July 2025.

The change of dates was necessitated to allow the University of Namibia, which will be the official Games Village, to conclude its examination schedule without disruption.

This decision was taken during the ministers’ meeting held on 12 and 13 December in Windhoek. The meeting was chaired by sports minister Agnes Tjongarero, and was attended by seven of the 10 member countries.

Next year’s AUSC Region 5 Youth Games marks the start of a new cycle for the games, following the completion of previous events hosted by all 10 member countries over the last two decades.

Namibia, originally not scheduled to host the 2025 Games, stepped in after Mozambique withdrew due to the political climate and adverse weather conditions.

Tjongarero emphasised the tight timeline for preparations, with Namibia having only six months to organise the event instead of the usual two years. She said despite the short timeframe, Namibia was determined to deliver the most memorable and climate-neutral games in the history of the region.

She said the ministers also underscored the importance of sustainability and environmental stewardship in the games. As part of the legacy of the games, member countries committed to planting 25 million fruit trees across the region to reduce the carbon footprint. This initiative aligns with the broader environmental goals, including minimising plastic use, conserving water and promoting renewable energy.

Several events will precede the Youth Games, including a torch relay passing through all 10 member countries. The ministers also approved support for the local organising committee to facilitate these activities.

Qualifying standards for future games will be introduced, starting with the 2026 edition in Maputo, Mozambique. Member countries are encouraged to hold national youth games to serve as qualifiers for the regional event.

Additionally, indigenous games will feature as part of the exhibition programme in
2025, paving the way for a regional indigenous games’ tournament in the future.

Preparations are well-underway, with renovations planned for the Games Village and the Swakopmund athletics track. Other key projects include upgrading tennis, netball and basketball facilities at the University of Namibia. The council emphasised the importance of safeguarding, inclusion and anti-doping education.

Workshops will be held to ensure that the Games uphold the highest standards of integrity and inclusivity.
