The South African Legends delivered a dominant 4-1 victory over hosts Botswana in the final of the third edition of the Clash of the Legends Four Nations Tournament.
The event was held at the vibrant Obed Itume Chilume Stadium in Francistown, Botswana.
The win secured South Africa’s third consecutive title in the popular veterans’ football tournament.
Adding to the excitement, Botswana’s president Duma Gideon Boko took to the pitch during the final, thrilling the crowd of over 12 000 spectators.
This year’s edition featured teams from Botswana, South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe.
Namibia, making their debut appearance at the tournament, finished third and walked away with bronze medals.
In their opening fixture, the Namibian Legends fell 4-0 to a youthful and well-coordinated Botswana side.
South Africa, powered past Zimbabwe 5-1 to book their spot in the final.
The Namibians bounced back with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Zimbabwe in their second match, securing third place.
Reflecting on the weekend, Bimbo Tjihero, head of delegation for Namibia, said: “What a successful event this was. It was such a pleasure reuniting with former legends. The idea was to come and have fun while competing. We obviously played against teams that have been together for a while. We couldn’t quite find our rhythm in the first match. But the team played brilliantly in the second game to secure bronze”.
Tjihero revealed plans to formalise the Namibian Legends structure: “Going forward, we aim to become a more organised institution that will inspire generations to come”.
The Clash of the Legends has become one of Botswana’s standout sporting events – not only celebrating football icons of the past but also raising funds to support former athletes who have fallen on hard times.
