Despite missing out on podium finishes at the recently concluded AUSC Region 5 Games, Namibia’s national tennis coach, Jandre Bezuidenhout, says the experience gained at the tournament will be invaluable going forward.
Namibia fielded nine players in the tennis competition, with all participants exiting in the quarterfinals in both singles and doubles events. Speaking after their final match, Bezuidenhout expressed pride in his team’s efforts.
“It has been a tough tournament, and I’m happy we were part of it. The level of tennis over the past few days was incredibly high, and every country came well prepared. It’s unfortunate we missed out on medals,” he said.
Bezuidenhout praised the overall organisation of the tournament, adding that it played a vital role in nurturing young talent and identifying future stars.
“We want to thank the organisers. This was an important event for all the sporting codes involved. The exposure our boys and girls received was massive as there were so many highly rated players here, and the standard of tennis was exceptional,” he added.
One of the players, Ruben Yssel, who narrowly missed out in the quarterfinals, shared his experience and lessons from the competition. “I was up against an older, higher-ranked opponent, but that didn’t faze me. I’m glad I learnt so much from facing such a strong player. It was tough, but we took valuable lessons, especially about the importance of proper preparation,” he said.
His teammate, John Theron Jr, echoed similar sentiments, expressing pride in both his individual and team performances. “Although these weren’t the results I was hoping for, as I envisioned myself going further, in sport you have to accept defeat sometimes. I’m happy I gave my best and represented my country with pride,” he added.
