Kaujeua Jr hailed for pioneering Nam folk sound

The Namibian house is mourning the death of Jackson Kaujeua Jr, a respected folk and traditional musician.

Kaujeua Jr, son of the late iconic musician Jackson Kaujeua, died on Sunday in Norway after a long a battle with cancer. He was 46.

Kaujeua Jr. carried the weight of his father’s legacy with quiet resilience, going on to make a mark within the Namibian music industry with his signature Nam folk sound.

He moved to Norway in the mid-2000s, where he performed and promoted Namibian music throughout Europe. Even in his last days, a video showed him strumming a guitar from his hospital bed, a final tribute to the craft that shaped his life.

His passing, just two days after reggae legend Ras Sheehama died, has caused shockwaves throughout the country’s creative community.

Parliament held a minute of silence: “We stand to observe a minute of silence in honour of our legendary musicians, the late Ras Sheehama and Jackson Kaujeua Jr.”

Jackson Kaujeua Jr is survived by family in Namibia and Norway.
