OSHAKATI – Build it Oshana successfully hosted its annual Under-13 Netball and Soccer tournament at Oshakati Stadium over the weekend.
The one-day event, held for the first time at the town’s main sports venue, brought together talented young athletes from across Oshana and nearby areas for a lively display of skill, teamwork, and community spirit. In the boys’ soccer category, Hashiyana Primary School was crowned champion, while Onamutai Primary School took second place.
Charles Anderson Combined and Okatana Primary School shared third place after tough semi-final battles. On the netball courts, Charles Anderson Combined School secured the top spot, followed by Hashiyana Primary in second, Ontinda Primary in third, and Oniimwandi Primary in fourth. The tournament featured a total of 16 schools, including eight netball teams—Elago, Ontinda, Emono, Ompandakani, Hashiyana, Mwadhina, Charles Anderson, and Oniimwandi—and eight soccer teams, namely Ekuku, Uukwiyu, Okamati, Hashiyana, Okatana, Onepaya, Ontinda, and Charles Anderson Combined and Primary Schools.
As part of Build It’s commitment to grassroots sports development, the winners received generous vouchers and cash prizes. In both soccer and netball, champions each received vouchers worth N$3 000, while runners-up earned N$2 000 vouchers. The two semi-finalists received N$1 000 vouchers apiece, and the standout player of each discipline pocketed a N$1 000 cash prize. In total, N$16 000 worth of vouchers and cash prizes were awarded across both sports.
According to Build It Oshana Sports Organizer Sylvia Naanda, the festival is more than just about winning trophies; it is about empowering children through sport. The lively atmosphere at Oshakati Stadium, filled with cheering learners, teachers, and community members, highlighted how the tournament has grown into a key event on the regional sporting calendar.
