Otjiwarongo launches constituency councillor’s cup

The Otjiwarongo Constituency councillor, Paulus Nekundi on Friday officially launched the first-ever constituency councillor’s cup to be played on 11 and 12 October at the DRC informal settlement open sport fields.

Nekundi said the purpose is to identify talent among the young people of the informal areas at the town, and also to prepare them for the upcoming national tournaments such as the 2026 The Namibian Newspaper Cup set to take place in //Kharas region.

“For now, we only want to involve football and netball teams with a plan to pull these young people off the streets and keep them busy, far away from the criminal activities and from alcohol and drug abuse,” he said.

According to Nekundi, the Otjiwarongo Constituency office generated about N$30 000 for this year’s tournament.

About 13 football teams and 10 netball teams were registered on Friday afternoon. The football champions will get N$20 000 and their netball counterpart N$10 000.

Nekundi plans to make the tournament an a growing annual event.

At the launch he also donated boxing gloves, boxing shoes, punching bags, skipping ropes, T-shirts and boxing headgear valued at N$20 000 to the coach of VH Otjiwarongo Boxing and Fitness Academy, Vilho Heita.
