SWAKOPMUND – Residents of Usakos are demanding more police visibility and stricter bail measures for violent criminals.
The concerned community held a peaceful protest yesterday morning and handed over a petition at the Usakos Magistrate’s Court.
The petition was received by prosecutor Steven Kamunima, just before murder accused Steven “Xam” Garoëb (39) made his first court appearance.
Garoëb is accused of killing Imolatria Gaoses (43) early Friday morning.
Blood-stained clothes hidden inside a water tanker led to his arrest after multiple residents identified the clothes and confirmed he had been seen with the deceased earlier that day.
It is alleged that Garoëb was recently released on parole after serving a sentence for rape and robbery.
Shocked residents, mostly women dressed in black, called for stronger policing and action against drugs and violence. They asked for a 24/7 operational police office in the area, a permanent crime prevention unit, and no bail for suspects linked to violent crimes. They also want the police to be present at community protests and drug awareness campaigns.
“We are grappling with the devastating consequences of violence, and it has become clear that immediate action is needed to restore safety and peace in our town. We also want a sting operation to eliminate the drug trade in our town. We ask that the police take a strong, visible and supportive stance by participating in patrols,” the petition said.
Community activist Valencia Nghmonno said the murder has shaken the community, mainly because the two knew each other from childhood.
“Even on the day of the murder, they were seen together. Both lived in Bô-dorp and were well known in the area. What is more hurtful is that our children are turning on each other this way,” she said.
Usakos mayor Irene Simeon-Kurz said the town is traumatised by the brutality of the killing.
“The murder was cruel, barbaric, and heinous. Usakos used to be a model town of peace, love, and care. Now we are shaken by the crimes happening in our society,” she said.
Garoëb’s case was postponed to 23 March 2026. He remains in police custody.
