Road accident claims three lives near Mariental

REHOBOTH – Three people, aged 23, 28 and 43 died on the spot after the motor vehicle they were travelling in collided head-on with an oncoming Land Cruiser pick up on the Mariental-Stampriet road on Saturday.

Namibian Police Force crime investigations coordinator for Hardap Deputy Commissioner Eric Clay told Nampa on Sunday the incident occurred at about 07h00 on Saturday on the C20 main road between Mariental and Stampriet, about 30 kilometres east of Mariental.

“It is alleged the driver of the motor vehicle with registration number N200-898W, a white Corsa Chevrolet, moved over the lane of the oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a white Toyota Land Cruiser registration number GOLDEN 2, who was travelling in the opposite direction. All three occupants of the Corsa died on scene and jaws of life was used to remove the bodies of the driver and one of his passengers,” Clay said.

The driver of the Land Cruiser was only slightly injured but was taken for observation to the Mariental State Hospital.

The driver of Land Cruiser was identified as Kobus Eloff (54), while the victims were identified as Hendrik Esterhuizen (43), who was the driver; Latoya Esterhuizen (28) and Jean Esterhuizen (23).

The next of kin of the victims have been informed and police are investigating a culpable homicide case. – Nampa
