Inter-Mine Sports Games return to Swakopmund

Inter-Mine Sports Games return to Swakopmund

The Chamber of Mines in Namibia is gearing up for an action-packed edition of the Inter-Mine Sports Games, which officially takes place on 21 and 22 November at the Vineta Central Sports Complex, Vineta North Fields and the Rossmund Golf Course in Swakopmund.

To accommodate the large number of participating teams, some soccer and volleyball fixtures kicked off yesterday, setting the tone for a competitive and unifying tournament. Once a flagship event on the mining industry’s annual calendar, the Inter-Mine Sports Games were halted following the global financial crisis, which strained budgets across operations.  In a statement, the organisers explained that the tradition was revived in 2022, thanks to Swakop Uranium’s initiative and has since evolved into a collective effort steered by the Chamber of Mines.

“With its rich heritage, the event has long been recognised as a platform that unearths national sporting talent and fosters unity and strength among employees and across the mining sector;  This year’s edition promises a vibrant blend of competition and community-building, featuring a diverse sporting roster, soccer, netball, volleyball, pool, chess, darts and golf,” the Chamber of Mines said in a statement.

The statement further reads that “A strong line-up of chamber members will go head-to-head across the various disciplines.

These include Debmarine Namibia, B2Gold Namibia, Namdeb, Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation, NIMT, Swakop Uranium, QKR Namibia Navachab Gold Mine, Andrada Mining, Reptile Mineral Resources and Exploration, Orano, Rössing Uranium, Beifang Mining and Langer Heinrich Uranium.”

To add colour and energy to the occasion, a mass street parade will launch the competition today at 07h00.

All participating teams will march from the Swakopmund Municipality parking area, proceed past the intersection of Rakotoka and Henties road, continue straight to Welwitschia street, and then turn right into the Vineta Central Sports Complex, officially marking the grand opening of the 2025 Inter-Mine Sports Games.
