EPUKIRO – Namibia Horse Racing Association (NHRA) newcomer Burger Racing (BR) is aiming for more victories in 2026 after an impressive debut season.
Formed last year, the Omaheke-based club quickly became a fan favourite, claiming 17 first-place finishes in just nine months. Its latest success came at the Tsjaka New Year Derby, where BR secured seven first-place, two second-place, and six third-place finishes across various plate categories.
Club owner Sakkie Burger (35) told New Era Sports that the goal for 2026 is to maintain dominance in all major competitions.
“This year, I want great wins from the first competition to the last. That is our prime objective, along with producing more horses for the club,” said Burger.
Burger, a UEFA-licensed coach in horse racing, recently purchased a new stallion as part of the club’s expansion plans. He stressed that a horse’s success depends on many factors: training, discipline, routine, nutrition, and stable management.
“My late father, Andre Burger, one of Namibia’s top horse breeders, inspired my passion for horse racing. I started racing in 2015 with a horse named General, and since then, it has been a great passion and source of satisfaction,” he said.
He acknowledged challenges, including losses due to drought, but revived the club in 2024 with the thoroughbred Justify, now growing to a stable of 12 horses.
Burger also praised his jockeys, emphasising their importance in the club’s achievements. “I train my horses with love and dedication and guide the jockeys on techniques. They are key stakeholders, and I ensure that they are motivated and fairly compensated,” he said.
The club has achieved notable successes in major competitions. In October 2025, Pee Jay won the 1400 metre main race at Angermund Racing in Rehoboth.
Action Time claimed the 2000m race at the MTC Winter Cup in Okahandja, while Pee Jay also triumphed in the 2200m main race at the MTC Summer Cup. Pee Jay, BR’s standout horse, amassed 17 first-place, two second-place, and four third-place finishes in nine months.
Burger acknowledged rival clubs, including Narris Turf Club, Angermund Racing, and WT Racing, for keeping competition healthy and motivating BR to improve after every race. He noted logistical challenges, particularly transporting horses safely to distant events.
Expressing gratitude to supporters and his wife, Dalleen, Burger concluded, “I am looking forward to the new year and its challenges and wish everyone a safe and prosperous 2026.”
