The weekend report recorded a range of criminal incidents and accidents across the country over the weekend, with cases including robbery and housebreaking to drug-related offences and natural incidents.
Gobabis robbery
In Gobabis, a 28-year-old man was arrested on Friday evening after allegedly robbing a 40-year-old woman at knifepoint in the industrial area. The suspect was apprehended with the assistance of security guards, and the stolen cell phone was recovered. A subsequent search revealed cannabis and drug paraphernalia in his possession.
Several robbery cases were also reported in the north. In Ondangwa, a 26-year-old man was allegedly forced to surrender cash amounting to N$19 000 by individuals known to him following a dispute after a delivery. In Eenhana, an unknown suspect robbed a bar of N$1 234. No arrests have been made in either case.
Housebreaking, theft
Housebreaking and theft incidents were reported in Bunya, Henties Bay, Mariental, Ongwediva, Keetmanshoop, and Rehoboth, with stolen property ranging from household items and electronics to a motor vehicle. Some suspects were arrested, including a 19-year-old in Mariental and three suspects in Keetmanshoop following the theft of a vehicle, which later overturned. Two of the suspects are minors.
Drugs
Drug-related arrests were made in Tsumeb, Katutura, and Opuwo, involving cannabis, Mandrax, ecstasy tablets, and mushrooms. Suspects are expected to appear in court this week.
Lightening incidents
Two lightning-related incidents were reported in Nkurenkuru. A 21-year-old man died after being struck while herding cattle, while a 26-year-old woman sustained serious injuries and is receiving medical treatment.
Rape, Fraud and others related cases
A rape case was reported in Okakarara involving a 17-year-old male and 15-year- old female.
A fraud case happened in Katutura where an elderly man lost over N$170 000, and the arrest of a suspect in Okahandja for allegedly selling a leopard skin without a permit. Police investigations into all reported cases are ongoing.
Pensioner defrauded
A 70-year-old Namibian man was defrauded of N$170 080 after a suspect impersonating a bank official obtained his bank PIN under false pretences at Nubuamis Hills in Brakwater on Friday afternoon.
According to the police, the incident occurred at around 15h25. No arrest has been made, and the stolen money has not been recovered.
In a separate incident on the same day at around 19h50 in Eros, a suspect allegedly smashed the left window of a parked vehicle using an unknown object and stole an iPhone 12 Pro Max valued at N$20 700. No recovery or arrest has been made.
In a separate incident, the body of an elderly man was allegedly found hanging from a tree at Helena Pieters location in Gibeon on Sunday.
The discovery was allegedly made by two boys who were heading to a shop. They then alerted nearby residents. The deceased was identified as 71-year-old Eduard Richeter. No foul play is suspected, and the body was transported to the Mariental State Hospital’s mortuary.
