The Eagles lost their opening match at the International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s T20 World Cup after going down by seven wickets to the Netherlands yesterday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, India.
This marks Namibia’s fourth appearance at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, having previously competed in the 2021, 2022, and 2024 editions. Over the years, the Eagles have steadily established themselves as a competitive associate nation on the global stage, earning respect among the world’s top cricketing nations.
Namibia is currently ranked 15th in the ICC Men’s T20 International rankings, while the Netherlands sit just one place above them in 14th position. Both sides are drawn in Group A of the tournament, alongside cricket heavyweights India and Pakistan, as well as the United States of America, making it one of the most competitive groups at the World Cup.
The Netherlands won the toss and elected to field first, a decision that paid off as they restricted Namibia to 156/8 in 20 overs.
Namibia’s top scorer was Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton, who contributed 42 runs off 38 balls, anchoring the innings during a challenging middle phase.
However, the total proved insufficient as the Netherlands finished on 159/3 in just 18 overs to secure a victory.
The Eagles now turn their attention to a daunting challenge against the world’s number one ranked T20 side, India. The two teams will face off on Thursday, 12 January at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi at 15h30 (Indian time).
Namibia will then take on the United States of America on 15 January 2026, as they look to bounce back and keep their World Cup campaign alive.
