Mobile Telecommunications Ltd (MTC), in collaboration with the City of Windhoek, has pledged N$450 000 to support a new environmental campaign called Go Green, Skip the Plastic.
The money will be used to buy 4 000 reusable shopping bags and to run an awareness campaign across Windhoek. The aim is to reduce the use of single-use plastic bags and encourage residents to protect the environment. Reusable bags will be handed out during clean-up campaigns in all Windhoek constituencies. They will also be distributed at shopping malls and other business centres in the city. MTC’s chief brand, marketing, communications and sustainability officer Tim Ekandjo said protecting the environment needs everyone to work together. “For us to safeguard and sustain the environment, it requ ires behavioural change and joint efforts from all stakeholders,” he said. He warned that plastic bags are harmful to the environment, further calling on residents to stop littering and help keep the city clean.
“Protecting the environment should not be optional. It is important for our future and for the next generations,” Ekandjo said.
He added that MTC has invested more than N$1 million in the City of Windhoek’s Clean City projects over the past few years. These projects include school clean-up campaigns, tree-planting activities and a waste sorting pilot project in Katutura. Windhoek Mayor Sakarias Uunona thanked MTC for its continued support. He encouraged other companies and organisations to join the effort to make Windhoek one of Africa’s cleanest cities again.
“We commend MTC for walking this journey with us. I call on more public and private partners to support clean city initiatives and help us create a safe and clean environment for all,” he said.
