The Namibian Golden Oldies Football Club, a team comprising players aged 60 and above, will travel to Upington, South Africa, this week for a friendly match against Upington Legends on 28 March 2026.
The encounter will mark the Golden Oldies’ first match of the year, with a second fixture anticipated in June.
Looking ahead, the team is also aiming to engage their Upington counterparts in discussions around hosting a Four Nations Trophy later this year in Namibia. The proposed tournament is expected to feature teams from Botswana, South Africa, Angola and the host nation.
According to team representatives John Ramakhutla and Theodor Kambanda, preparations are on track and the squad is eager for the challenge.
“We have been trying to engage Upington for the past three years and we are glad to finally play against them,” said Kambanda.
Beyond competition, the team is looking forward to building friendships as they compete for medals and a trophy.
“Upington is playing for everything. We have to be serious and give our best,” Ramakhutla added.
In terms of preparation, players currently train individually because they are based in different towns, although those in Windhoek make an effort to train together regularly.
The Golden Oldies are encouraging all football players aged 60 and above to join the team, highlighting the health benefits of staying active later in life.
The club is also appealing for donations to help make the trip possible and ensure a worthwhile experience for all involved.
