The Namibian mixed martial arts (MMA) team is seeking sponsorship support as it prepares for a demanding 2026 international competition schedule.
According to team head coach Carlos De Sousa, financial backing will be crucial to ensure that local athletes can compete at major continental and global events throughout the year.
The team is set to participate in several competitions, including multiple elite MMA events in South Africa, the IMMAF African Championships in Luanda, Angola, from 13 to 19 April, the IMMAF Youth World Championships in Abu Dhabi in August, and the IMMAF Junior and Senior World Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia, in November.
De Sousa said these events provide vital exposure for Namibian fighters and a platform to showcase the country’s growing talent in the sport.
“Our team has consistently demonstrated excellence on both continental and global
stages,” he said.
Namibian athletes have already produced notable results, including a bronze medal at the 2025 IMMAF Youth World Championships in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, as well as gold medals at the IMMAF African Championships held in Luanda and Namibia since 2023.
“These achievements highlight the strength, discipline and international competitiveness of Namibian MMA athletes. With continued support, we are confident in building on this success throughout 2026,” De Sousa added.
However, participation in international competitions comes at a high cost. The team estimates that competing in South African events alone costs around N$10 000 per athlete per trip, covering travel, accommodation, meals, event registration and medical requirements.
Additional funding will also be required for African and World Championship events due to higher travel and accommodation expenses.
De Sousa warned that without sponsorship, many talented fighters could miss the opportunity to compete on the international stage.
“Without sponsorship support, many of our talented athletes face financial challenges that could prevent them from competing at these prestigious events,” he said.
The team believes sponsorship partnerships would not only support medal-winning athletes but also promote youth development and positive role models in communities.
Sponsors would also gain brand visibility through international events, social media exposure, branded apparel and promotional campaigns. De Sousa said the team is open to discussing various sponsorship packages, including event-based partnerships, travel sponsorship and team kit branding opportunities, as they aim to make 2026 another landmark year for Namibian MMA. -lmupetami@nepc.com.na
