The Opuwo Annual Trade Fair Society will host its third horse racing showdown at the Newman Katuta Sports Field from 25-26 April 2026.  Organisers promise a thrilling weekend of sport, culture and community engagement.

The event is aimed at expanding activities within the annual trade fair while giving local riders a competitive platform to showcase their talent. Organisers say more than 35 horses and donkeys are expected to participate across different race categories.

In an interview with Nampa, horse racing organiser Irende Kavari said the initiative was introduced to make the trade fair more inclusive and enjoyable for all age groups.

“The trade fair is an event of happiness for the whole community. We decided to include horse racing so that even our elders feel part of the celebrations, not only the youth, who mostly enjoy the music events,” Kavari said.

He highlighted safety concerns from previous events, where spectators ran onto the racing track.

He added that measures are being put in place to prevent accidents.

“In the past, people got too excited and entered the racing line, which is very dangerous. This year, we are putting up fencing to control the crowd and ensure safety for everyone,” he said. The event will also provide economic opportunities for local vendors, who will set up stalls selling food, drinks and traditional meals during the two-day gathering.

Local horse owner Uatekera Mbinge confirmed that his horse Roma will return to defend its strong record after winning both the 1 600m and 2 000m races last year.

“Roma is ready again this year. This will be our third time competing at the trade fair. We are fully prepared to give our best performance,” Mbinge said confidently.

Entry fees are set at N$400 for horses and N$250 for donkeys, with prize money varying by category. 

Horse races range from N$4 000 to N$10 000 depending on distance, while donkey races offer prizes between N$500 and N$3 000.

The races will feature 1 000m, 1 400m, 1 600m and 2 000m categories, with organisers noting that registration is still ongoing.
